The MICIMATT Song

By Donald A. Smith, PhD, with help from AI tools.

MICIMATT is a term coined by former CIA office Ray McGovern. It's an acronym that stands for the Military-Industrial-Congressional-Intelligence-Media-Academia-Think-Tank Complex (a generalization of the Military-Industrial Complex).

Well, the Pentagon needs a brand-new toy, The Agency whispers, “Sources say…”
And Congress says, “Oh, what a joy!” The newspapers print it right away.
Talking heads say, “It keeps us free,” A retired general hits TV:
Contractors send checks to the HASC. “We need resolve—and urgently!”
The spooks say, “Threats are everywhere!” His chyron says SECURITY PRO,
The networks shout, “Be very scared!” Not “Board Member, BigBombCo.”
A scholar writes, “We must attack”— Then six professors all concur—
Guess who funded his little think tank? Their center’s funded by… well, never mind, sir.

MICIMATT! MICIMATT! More weapons! More bases!
Profits boom with rat-a-tat-tat! More enemies overseas!
Bombs and briefs and talking heads, More panels on the danger!
Moving money, spreading dread. More covert CIA operations!
General, senator, pundit, prof— More experts saying “The next Hitler!
Everybody gets to gorge at the trough. Fund my institute to study why
MICIMATT! MICIMATT! The military budget should multiply!”
War is where the money’s at!

Lockheed says, “We need more planes.” Congress asks the Pentagon,
The admiral solemnly explains: “Tell us what could possibly go wrong?”
“Our rivals have a thing that flies— The Pentagon says, “Without more dough,
We need twelve thousand, twice the size.” Civilization’s got six months to go.”
Boeing nods and RTX agrees, The headlines scream, the markets cheer,
“Peace is nice—but mind the fees.” The threat assessment doubles every year.
The budget grows, the deficit too— Then peace breaks out—oh, what a fright!
But Grandma’s medicines? “Can’t afford Quick! Find another foe by Tuesday night!
those for you.”

MICIMATT! MICIMATT! MICIMATT! MICIMATT!
What a marvelous acrobat! You can’t make peace with profits like that!
Cut the schools and close the clinic, From the hearing room to the evening news,
Call the peacenik “unrealistic.” Everybody wins—except you-know-who.
Every missile, every drone, Wave the flag and pass the hat,
Has a congressional district of its own. There’s always room for more combat.
MICIMATT! MICIMATT! MICIMATT! MICIMATT!
Fiscal hawks go purring fat! The war machine’s a fat fat cat!

                                            If the enemy disappears someday,
Don’t worry—they’ll make another right away.
For freedom, democracy, peace—and all that…

                                            Long live the MICIMATT!

                                            (Cha-ching.)
